GALLANTRY ON BOUGAINVILLE
V.G. FOR AUSTRALIAN PRIVATE,
(Rec. 15.5 p.m.) CANBERRA, January 23. The Victoria Cross has been awarded Private Frank John Partridge, of Macksville, northern New South Wales. Partridge is the twentieth Australian V.C. winner of World War n. and the first militiaman to win the decoration. The award was made for outstanding gallantry at Bougainville on July 24, 1945, 22 days before hostilities in the Pacific ceased. The occasion was an attack on strongly-held bunkers with a Bren gun and grenades.
