When play commenced Canterbury was only 3 runs ahead, with four wickets down in the second innings. A solid partnership, however, between Z. Hocking and P. Taylor lasted long enough to tire the bowlers, and later P. Pentecost and V. Russell hit hard and often. The Canterbury total was taken to 160, leaving Wellington 118 to win. The Wellington bowling, although losing some of its sting, was always steady. J. Francis and 1. La mason were inexpensive, but surprisingly little use was made of Hnrcomb. Wellington lost a wicket ■ with the first ball of the innings, but J. Hatcher and Hnrcomb added 32, and Wellington's chances looked quite good. After that wickets fell quickly, and when Hatcher was out after a patient innings Canterbury was. on top. The total was 77, leaving Canterbury the winner by 40 runs. M. Thomas was again steady, and P. Taylor bowled some really good ones. A feature of the innings was that Z. Martin took no fewer than four catches. - V. Rus- [ sell kept a good length with her lefthand slows to take three cheap wicket ß
