NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 6. ; The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were commenced on Saturday at the Stanley street courts, in the presence of nearly 2,000 spectators. A high standard of play was witnessed in most of the events, and it. is fully expected that this will.be excelled as the tournament proceeds. There were no unexpected upsets in the first rounds, though several matches went the full five sets. A number of players .who were unable to reach the courts in time for the opening day, including D. C. Coombe. who is on his way from England, were defaulted as their matches were reached.- Exceptionally good progress was made, 67 of the total of ISO matches having been decided. The weather wa6 fine and warm, and the courts were fast and true. The following are the results of the first day’s play:— MEN’S SINGLES.
