SINGLES MATCHES (P.A.) AUCKLAND, January 7, Under excellent weather conditions the New Zealand tennis championships were resumed. This morning’s results :—• MEN’S SINGLES. ; —Third Round.— D. Livingstone (Waikato) beat J. D. Lewis (Auckland), 6-1, 6-1, 6-4. N. F. Bedford (Auckland) beat I. Pomeroy (Waikato), 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. S. Painter (Wellington) beat W. S. Huckstep-(Auckland), 6-0, 6-1, 6-1. N. V. Edwards (Hutt Valley) beat R. Sampson (Waikato), 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. K. J. M. Hayr (Auckland) beat A. M. McCardle (Wellington), 0-6, 64, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. O. M. Bold (Hutt Valley) beat D. P. Smith (Auckland), 6-1, 6-1. 6-0. Despite a valiant effort in the third set, the left-handed Canterbury player, R. G. Pattinson, did not at any stage look like taking the honours from G. (Radnich (Auckland), who showed initiative which more than made up for occasional failures in overhead work. WOMEN’S SINGLES. —Second Round. — Mrs J. Robb (Wellington) beat Miss L. Karauti (Poverty Bay), 6-2, 6-1. Mrs J. Graham (Hutt Valley) beat Miss H. Redwood (Auckland), 6-1, 64. Mrs L. M. Kennedy (Hutt Valley) beat Miss V. G. Johnson (Auckland), 6-2, 6-0. Miss M. Beverlev (Waikato) beat Mrs I. M. Edwards (Hutt), 6-0, 6-3. In a match having only occasional flashes of high standard, the 1937 national singles champion, Miss Margaret Beverley (Waikao) eliminated Mrs Neil Edwards (Hutt). Mrs Edwards made some excellent recoveries and caught the former champion out of position, but Miss Beverley’s superior court craft and aggressiveness carried the day. Miss Beverley was unable to play on Saturday owing to a heavy cold.
