FAVOURITES FARE BADLY CHAMPAGNE STAKES TO PALM BEARER The attendance at the second day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Cup Meeting at Wingatui yesterday was severely affected by the unpleasant weather, and this'was reflected in the gate takings, which showed a drop ,from £1,311 oiT Boxing Day last year to £9lO. Although heavy rain fell afte.r the %st race, there,.were only light showers thereafter, and conditions on the course were not as bad as might have been expected.. The standard of the racing, was good in spite of . the heavy track, but public fancies did hot enjoy a great, deal of success, and four successful horses paid win dividends of more than £lO, Silver Sal, winner of the Dunedin Cup, paying more than two score. The totalisator handled £49,536, compared with £58,116, a drop of £8,580.

Only three horses faced the starters in the Champagne Stakes. Naughty Lady, jumped out well, and led by three lengths from Palm Bearer and Cold Feet. She held her lead down the back and led into the straight, blit Palm Bearer won by three lengths from Naughty Lady. Cold Feet was 10 lengths back. The investments on Palm Bearer more than equalled those on the other two starters. Time, T. 22.

Prize Ring took charge down the back from Siegform, Altruist, and Te Anau Lady. Prize Ring led into the straight from Te Anau Lady, Western Front, and Siegform. The last-named came strongly, but could not maintain his burst, and Western Front won by three lengths from Te Anau Lady, who finished four' lengths • ahead of Siegform. After three furlongs Real Chase was still in charge from Gamble, Eastern Coin, Great Coon, Double Cross, Lord Dundonald, and Foxchase. Great Coon then came to the front and led into the straight from Lord _ Dundonald, Double Cross, Eastern Coin, and Foxcliase. , Great Coon went on to win by half a length frpm. Foxchase. Eastern Coin was third, a length and a-half hack and,-Double Cross fourth. Then came Lord Dundonald, Foxhaven, and Real Chase. Time, 1.47 1-5. Great Coon carried £1,729, Foxchase £995, and Eastern Coin £376.
