DEATH SENTENCE
GUILTY ON TWO COUNTS (Rec. 11 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. Walter Purdy was to-day sentenced to death at the Old Bailey for high treason. He was found guilty on two counts—first that he assisted the enemy by broalcasting, and second that he assisted the enemy in preparing and editing leaflets to be dropped on Allied troops. The jury found him not guilty on tie third charge—that he detrayed the secrets of his fellow prisoners. Mr Justice Oliver, summing up, said Purdy was entitled to acquittal if the jury accepted the motive that the broadcasting was an honest attempt to assist the ■ Allies, and if it accepted accused's own siatement that he prepared the leaflets under threat of death. When iae jury returned the verdicts Purdy's sister, Mrs Horton, collapsed and hid to be carried from the court.
