LONG LEAVELESS SERVICE
NEW ZEALAND TROOPS ABROAD EXAMPLE CITED TO COMPLAINING BRITISH FORCES (Rec. 11.50 a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 21. The War Office cites the length of service without home leave of New_ Zealand troops waiting for repatriation from Italy in replying to complaints that British troops are missing Christmas at home because the liner Orion, leaving Liverpool on December 23, is scheduled to pick up New Zealanders in Italy after disembarking British troops. The War Office said: " New Zealand troops have not even had home leave since 1940. They have been through Greece; Crete, and the major Middle East campaigns. British troops have already had leave and are not entitled to extra Christmas leave." The Orion is carrying 3,000 artillerymen, engineers, and signallers, many of whom complain they have had no Christmas at home since 1939.
