FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AT ALL MEETINGS WASHINGTON, December 20. Generalissimo Stalin reoeived Mr Devin and Mr Byrnes yesterday, says the Moscow radio.. M. Molotov, Sir Archibald Clark Kerr, and Sir Alexander Cadogan, were present during Mr Bevin’s interview. M. Molotov and Mr W. A. Harriman were present during Mr Byrnes’s interview. The Associated Press of America says the Foreign Ministers went into conference yesterday an hour later than usual. Mr Bevin is keeping the dominion Ministers fully informed on the Moscow talks, says the * Daily Mail’s ’ correspondent, who adds that the Chinese and French Ambassadors are in constant touch with Mr Bevin and Mr Byrnes. Mr Bevin, Mr Byrnes, and M. Molotov had lunch together at Spiridonovskaya Palace in an informal cordial gathering, says Reuter’s Moscow correspondent . The luncheon preceded the regular session of the three-Power conference. Mr Bevin earlier saw the French and Chinese Ambassadors.
Mr Byrnes last night had a short private meeting with M. Molotov. It is understood that the atmosphere at all the meetings so far has been most friendly, with much good-natured banter.
Mr Byrnes has acquired four words of Russian—soglasen, meaning agreed; da and nyet, meaning yes and no; ohoroslio, meaning good. Mr Bevin has got as far as da and nyet. M. Molotov understands a fair amount of English and uses “ 0.K.” and “ goodbye.” The British delegation is still in difficulties as all the staff are still held up in Berlin by the weather. Only the heads of the mission and several assistants have arrived in Moscow.
