Wanaka-Hawea-Haast * Pass.—There me some slips on the road on the Hawea. side of Makarora, but the road is negotiable to one mile beyond Makarora. It is not advisable for cars drawing caravans or trailers to proceed beyond the Neck. The road beyond Makarora is not negotiable for cars, there being some wash-outs and slips. Queenstown - Wanaka via Crown Range.—This route is not suitable for cars drawing caravans. These should proceed to Wanaka via Lowburn. Skippers Road.—Motorists are advised that this road is not recommended for nervous or inexperienced drivers (or passengers).

Queenstown-Kingston.—There is a deviation through Lumber Box Creek which is narrow and allows one-way traffic onlv.

Motorists are advised that petrol cannot legally be obtained between 12 noon on Saturdays and 8 a.m. on Mondays unless it is a case of emergency, when a special- form must be signed stating the reason. for requiring it. Petrol stations will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and open on Boxing Day between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Motorists are particularly requested to exercise great care during the coming holiday season. Many more cars will be on the road. Some of these are not in the best mechanical condition, and most tyres are worn. It should be remembered that although the 40 m.p.h. speed limit is still in force, this is too high to be safe on many roads.
