BOWLING NOTES

IBy Draw.] Saturday Interclub Competition. After so many clays with rain during the week, bowlers were fortunate to get through the seventh round of the series under' fairly good conditions, though many of the greens were on the slow side last Saturday; Portobello Club, which lias scored consistently well every Saturday, still maintains a substantial lead. No club secured the maximum points. The position of teams to date is as follows:

Holmes Feathers Competition. The Otago team continued, on its winning way by accounting for Caverfclmm. (Roslyn took part in another sensational finish in its defeat of Kaituna by a point. The former has lost onlv two games, while Kaituna has lost three, and all bv the narrowest of margins. Port Chalmers has so far only one defeat, that by Otago, and while it has some of the leading cluhs yet to meet, further successes may not be beyond it. Kaikorai had a good go with North-east Valiev, an extra end hemg necessary to determine the re“ult, and these two clubs, together with Caledonian, St. Clair. St. Kilda. Roslyn, and Logan Park, each have two losses to date. Caledonian accounted for St. Kilda. Mornington had a win over Balmacewen. and so far the latter has been up on its opponents in one game only, that against Roslyn, Logan Park is doing well, and had a good win over Taieri. Dunedin had an exceptionally big wiu over Leith (107-441. Otago seems to have a great chance of winning this contest outright on present form.

The position of teams to date is as follows: Club Wins Losses.

Wednesday Competition. The following is the position of the teams in the competition after the frames played on Wednesday. December 12:—

Bowling Blazers. During the war period the Taieri and lioslyn Clubs brought the question of having one colour for a centre or province, and it was decided to refer the matter to the New Zealand Bowling Council for consideration and support. The last the writer heard of this verv important remit was that the council had deferred consideration. Just recently the council’s latest executive had decided to approach the Council of Sport as to whether blazer cloth would be procurable in the near future. This attitude takes some understanding, as one would naturally think that the Bowling Council was competent to discharge this class of work for itself. The writer understands that some dubs have already placed an order for their “ old ” colour blazer cloth, with the promise of early delivery. Still, the writer thinks that the Dunedin Centre should again approach the head body as to its opinion on the question of a national coloured blazer or a series of provincial colours, so that there will be some finality in regard to this important matter.

Bowlers’ Refreshments. The decision of the pastrycook-firms not to operate on Saturdays means that clubs will have to look into the question of catering. Most clubs have had some firm to supply their requirements each Saturday, but the pastrycooks’ decision means that other ways and means may be necessary to supply the refreshment tables. There are many players who think that assorted biscuits and cheese are quite sufficient for the Saturday and Wednesday games, and if this fare is adopted in the new year no harm will be done competitors or the game. Central Otago Bowling.

With the adoption of a helpful and practical policy by the Oil Fuel Authorities, bowlers of Central Otago districts have been able again to enjoy interclub matches, as well as the Jolly memorial special rink competition. It is pleasing to see our Central friends again able to meet in friendly competition. During the holiday period many Dunedin bowlers are going to Central Otago to take part in various tournaments, and they are sure to have a good time and to receive a cordial welcome from the players and residents of sunny Central Otago.

Christmas Pairs. The entries, which total 110 pairs, must be considered very satisfactory. Eight greens will be used, and they include the leading ones of the centre. Few visitors are to be found amongst the entrants, but one is A. Glengarry (Wanganui), who will be remembered as a verv solid scrum-half for the Alhambra Club a few years back. Another is Tom Sunderland (Alexandra), who is well known in this centre and prominent in Central Otago matters. Book on Bowling.

J. D. Best, in his recently-published book, devotes considerable space in it to the performances of the Wonder Bowler of New Zealand, William Carswell. From the year 1888 to 1944-45 this great player has been in the money, so to speak. Carswell’s record is a truly wonderful one, and most likely lias no equal in the world of bowliug. The veteran, who is still playing for the Taieri Club, celebrated his birthday during December, and he is now in his eighty-fifth year. “ Draw ” wishes Bill many happy returns. Caversham Club.

The Caversham Club is still adding to its membership, with already some 30 new members. This places the club high on the list in the centre, and. with 22 teams taking part in the two Saturday competitions, the club holds the record for representation in the series, this naturally proving a problem for tho club selector. A note from this club’s

captain suggests Hazel Avenue as the most convenient parking place for bowlers visiting the green. The good wishes extended to “ Draw ” are appreciated. One Day Tournaments. Leith Club is holding.tournaments on Saturday; December *22, and Wednesday, January 22. Entries in each case close with-the club’s secretary two clays earlier. Caversham and Caledonian are holding tournaments on Saturday, January 5. The usual New Year’s Day tournament is being conducted by the hill clubs, Roslyn, Balmacewen. and Kaikorai. On January 12 four tournaments are allotted to Kaituna and Opoho. The Hospital Nurses. Last Saturday the nurses, whose home adjoins the Dunedin Club’s green, held a special gala day to raise funds for Christmas cheer. The various bowlers playing at Dunedin took up a collection and assisted, the nurses’ endeavour by a substantial contribution. That action is only in keeping with the benevolent spirit of bowlers generally. Mr H. G. Williams, president of the Dunedin Club, conveyed to the nurses the very best wishes of the bowlers and at the same time thanked them for their great assistance to the community. R.S.A. Bowling.

Considerable interest is being shown in the 11.5. A. singles championship, but a good many clubs that are known to be taking part have not yet notified the It.S.A. that they are doing so. The It.S.A. secretary would be pleased to hear from the secretaries of all clubs which are taking part in the competition, and he would like to have the name or names of the It.S.A. members appointed to take entries and generally supervise arrangements. The date laid down by the association for finding club winners is January 31. In view of probable delays through the holidays and the Dominion Tournament it is desirable that the competition should be pushed along as rapidly as possible. The Festive Season.

“ Draw ” takes this opportunity of wishing all bowlers the compliments of the season. He also sincerely hopes that the weather conditions for the balance of the playing period will show a decided improvement.
