WOMEN’S REST ROOMS.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I think Councillor M. Connelly, M.L.C., is to be heartily congratulated on the splendid effort he made at the recent City Council meeting when lie moved “ that it be a recommendation from the council that estimates and plans be prepared to enable the erection of a modern women’s vest room on the council’s property adjoining the present women’s rest room, to be proceeded with next year.” I feel sure that he deserves the wholehearted support of all citizens and women’s organisations, and it was rather disappointing to read that his motion was defeated by a majority ,of councillors representing the so-called Citizen’s Association. One would have thought ■ that these councillors would have been only too pleased to support a motion' and an idea which is a very sound one, thus helping their women folk to enjoy the comforts which they so deserve after perhaps a strenuous hour or so’s shopping with small children. Many a woman would be happy to go into the city rest rooms and have a rest for a while if there were up-to-date rooms’ on a ground floor, instead of having to carry heavy parcels and children up a steep flight of stairs like those at the present room. Princes street is an ideal site for the rooms. The amendment which was carried seems to be ridiculous and uncalled for, as it contains nearly all of Councillor Connelly’s motion excepting the latter part, “on the council’s property, next year.” Whero do these councillors want it erected, and when? I suppose on Signal Hill, to keep the so-called Centennial memorial company,- or in some back street about half a mile or more, from the centre of the city, and built in about 10 or 20 years. We are about to celebrate in another two years the province’s centenary, and no better and more fitting memorial could be erected than . decent and up-to-date rest rooms. It is up to the women of Dunedin to support Councillor Connelly’s proposal.—l am, etc., December 20. Supporter.
