SHIP DESERTION
THREE SEAMEN IN TROUBLE Three seamen from an overseas ship who left it at Bluff and proceeded to Waipori, where they were arrested yesterday, appeared in the Police Court to-day charged with deserting the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company’s vessel Cromarty on October 23. They were Leslie Ferguson Anderson, James Quinn, and Roderick Devlin, who pleaded guilty, and .were sentenced to two days’ imprisonment. Sergeant N. Kempt said that after leaving the vessel at Bluff, the three men proceeded. direct to Waipori, where they obtained employment, with a contractor. He became 'suspicious when they were unable to produce levy books, and the police were notified. 1 Their desertion did not delay the ship, but replacements had to be found, including two from Wellington. The Cromarty left for overseas last Saturday. The three men had stated they left the vessel because they desired to settle in this country. Sentencing the accused, Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., said that ship desertion was a serious offence, and in any case, the men had gone the wrong way about carrying out their intention to. stay in the Dominion.
