NEW SHIPS IN CONSTRUCTION ENGLAND-NEW ZEALAND SERVICE LONDON, November 6. Six large and two smaller freighters, costing about £7,000,000, have been ordered from British shipbuilders by the Federal Steam Navigation _ Company and the New Zealand Shipping Company, both of which are associated ■with the P. and 0., says ' The Times.' The ships will bo used to carry essential commodities to Britain, largely meat and dairy produce from New Zealand and Australia. The two companies at the outbreak of the war owned 37 large refrigerated liners, but lost 18 during the war. Two new ships, the Devon and the Somerset, each 10,000 tons gross, will bo delivered in January and June respectively. They will have-a capacity for refrigerated cargo of between 400,000 and 450,000 cubic feet, and between 100,000 and 150,000 cubic feet for general cargo. The motor vessel Norfolk, of 11,000 tons gross, will be completed in September, and a contract has been placed for five similar motor ships. Tlioy will have a capacity of 500,000 cubic Coot for refrigerated cargo, and 200.000 cubic foot for general cargo. It may be broadly said that the costs of precisely similar ships are now fully double those ruling before the war.'
