SMALLER CLASSES
450 NEW TEACHING POSTS ACCOMMODATION PROEUM STILL ACUTE (Special.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. By creating approximately 450 new positions for assistant masters, in the larger primary schools, considerable progress .will be made in the plans for smaller classes. This announcement was made to-day by the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason. He explained! that the majority of the new positions would be filled by returned servicemen. It was proposed that two additional assistant masters would be added to the staff of the largest schools, while smaller schools with a roll of over 240 would get one extra teacher. Further, staffing improvement was intended, as more teachers became available, and other grades of schools would! benefit. However, the Minister _ pointed out that handicaps in providing adequate facilities for the all-round development of children included the problem , of class-room accommodation, , which, owing to shortage of material and labour, was proving a difficult one.
