WAKARI-KAIKORAI AMENITIES

IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY At the monthly meeting of the above vsociety, heb;l in the School Hall on Thursday, the president (Mr J. N. Allan) presided over a good attendance. A letter was received from the town clerk regarding a water supply for residents of Wakari road. The letter stated that the only feasible scheme was too costly, and in view of the numbers to be served, such expenditure was not warranted in the meantime.— Received, the matter being held over in the meantime. The Town Clerk also wrote as follows, in reply to representations from the society:—Asphalt crossovers across grass plots at intersections would be constructed. Dale street—maintenance attention had been #iven. Culvert at intersection of Ethel and Berwick streets would be attended to. With regard to the provision of steps and a handrail on the west side of Gilmore street, the Town Clerk advised that the expense of constructing such steps was not considered justified at present, and no funds were available which could be allocated to the work. Til the meantime, in frosty weather, the path would be treated with salt and toppings, and provision of a handrail at the baclk of the path would be considered when an estimate of the cost was made.—lt was decided to that the path be levelled at gateways and that the handrail be provided at the outside of the path. It was decided that the town clerk be written to regarding the following matters:—Asphalting of Oliver street (to be put on next estimates); asphalting of road surfaces on the bus route; that the hedge at the corner of Chapman and Lynn streets be cut to give a better view to traffic; that the light in Farley street be better placed to improve the lighting of the street, which is very darik; that the channelling in Farley street be renewed, as water is seeping into private property; that the reserve be put in order, and the grass cut._ It was also decided to ask that playing areas and equipment be provided on vacant areas throughout the district and the reserve. This would provide healthy recreation and remove a constant som-ce of worry and anxiety from the minds of bus drivers through children playing on the roads. It was decided to forward the follr-w----ing requests to the acting transport manager:—That all buses (ivhere possible) go down to the Octagon; that the practice of picking up passengers on _ the down trip after leaving the Kaikorai terminus be discontinued; than an official stop be made at the corner of Smith and Tennyson streets, and a sign to that effect erected. The secretary was instructed to write to the Housing Department requesting that the paths beween Greenhill Ave" nue and Prospect Bank, and Prospect Bank and Craighall Crescent, be put in order. The Secretary reported that the first of the general 1 information booklets would come to hand on November B. It was decided that none be distributed until all were received.
