GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH In presenting a summary of the position of the Green Island Borough Council, as at the end of the first six months of the current financial year to fhe meeting of the council last night, the borough treasurer (Mr R. J. K. Gillies) reported that the totai receipts for the six months ended September 30 were £12,709 14s, while the total payments amounted to £11,150 lis 2d. The figures for the - same ■ period last year were ,£13,239 12s and £11,708 15s The expenditure in some accounts was a little high when compared with the estimates for this year. However, the general position was quite satisfactory. Current Rates.—The rates'levied for this year amounted to £ll,lOl 4s Id, and of this sum £7.120 14s 6d was paid to September 30. This, together with the rebate allowed £159 lis lOd, represented 65.58 per cent. Last year the collection percentage was 62.8, the figures being £11,119 15s 9d levied and £6,982 19s 8d (including rebate) collected. This year's collection was the best on record. Rate Arrears.—Rate arrears outstanding at March 31 last amounted to £302 12s lOd, including the 10 per cent, penalty. £2OB 16s lOd of this sum was collected .to September 30. and this, together with the sum of £3l 6s 8d (rates overcharged on Government housing properties) written off. left £62 9s 4d outstanding at that date. Last year the arrears outstanding at September 30 were £77 15s 5d (including penalty), and the year before £179 0s 6d. Ten years ago, at this date, the rate arrears outstanding were £835 lis 4d, exclusive of the 10 per cent, penalty. The overdraft interest for the ?ix months ended September 30 was £5 3s 3d. Last year the interest amounted to £9 5s 3d. and the year before to £l3 18s When it was pointed out that the interest for the first six months of 1936 was £76 3s 3d, and the year 1938 £94 lis, it would be seen that the overdraft interest had been reduced to a minimum.
