AUCKLAND GAS SHORTAGE
ANOTHER ACUTE CRISIS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, November 5. It is possible that the present restrictions on the nse of gas in Auckland will become more severe from tomorrow, as the Union Company’s Karepo has not yet left Westport with supplies of coal which are being awaitfd in Auckland. “ The further delay to the Karepo means that more drastic restrictions will have to be imposed, said the general manager of the Auckland Gas Company, Mr R. Worley, to-day. “ We may have sufficient coal to scrape by to-morrow, but certainly after Wednesday a tightening-up will be necessary.” Although the exact times had vet to be decided, he said that it would ho possible to provide gas each day for only two meal hours of two hours each. A message from Westport late tonight stated that there was no prospect of the Karepo sailing before 10 a.m. to-morrow. «. Supplies of coal, which were to have been brought by special train from Wellington to relieve the shortage, have been found unsuitable for the purpose, and will not now bo railed to Auckland.
