COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

OTAGO BRANCH MEETS The monthly meeting of the Otago branch of the National Council of Churches was held on Thursday last. The Rev. W. G. Slade. presided. In riew of the illness of Adjutant Elliott it was decided to write expressing sympathy and good wishes. The Rev. A. M. EllifTe, who was associated with the meeting, reported on developments in connection with the proposed interdenominational Youth Centre and Co-ed. Club. There were now better prospects, he stated, of securing a suitable director. The committee was asked to continue its work and to interview the various churches with a view to ascertaining the amount of support likely to be forthcoming for this venture. The project was fully discussed, and the feeling was that there was an evident need for some such activity and that Dunedin offered a favourable community for such an experiment. A letter from the Otago School of Religious Education Committee asked the council's support for a conference concerning youth leadership and Sunday school teacher training to be held in First Church on October 30. This meeting, it was stated, had as its object a post-war review and what the churches were doing separately and what they might do more effectively in co-operation in such training. It was agreed that the meeting be commended to ministers of all churches and that as many members of the council as possible attend. The Rev. H. C. Dixon reported that the Youth Committee had held a successful interchurch sports meeting, at which the Presbyterian teams were the winners and the Methodist teams the runners-up. Athletic championships, football and basketball tournaments werp under consideration. The physical recreation course had been attended by 30 students, and their closing demonstration would be given in St. Paul's school room on November

15. The executive of the National Council requested ' the Otago branch to draw up a leaflet for the guidance of other branches. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman, the secretary, and the Rev. R. S. Watson.
