MAN-POWER APPEALS

YESTERDAY’S CASES The Industrial Man-power Appeal Committee continued its sitting yesterday afternoon under the chairmanship of Mr M. W. Grantham. With him were associated Mr H. H. Giliard and Mr G. F. McKellar. Mr A. H. Joyce, a shiftman, employed in the mine by the Kaitangata Coal Company Ltd., appealed against a decision refusing him permission to terminate his employment there. He intended operating a fishing trawler from Poimawea. The case was adjourned pending an examination by a medical hoard.

Appealing against the direction that Miss B. Brown take up employment as a shorthand typiste at Seaeliff Mental Hospital were the District Public Trustee, her present employer, and Mr J. P. Ward, acting on behalf of Miss Brown. The appeals were both allowed.

Claiming to be temperamentally unfitted for any kind of nursing work, Miss D. E. Adam, a clerical worker in the Customs Department, appealed against a direction of the man-power officer that she take employment at Seaeliff Mental Hospital.—Decision was reserved.

Mr C .1. L. White appeared for Mr S. L. Walker in his appeal against direction that he take up employment with Fletcher Construction Co. Ltd. The Chairman commented that the circumstances showed a degree of hardship, as the appellant had spent a good deal of money preparatory to taking up business on his own account. Mr Edward L. Young, manager of Fletcher Construction Company, opposed the appeal, giving evidence as»to the urgency of building a new linseed oil factory, which it was imperative should be finished by the end of January.—Decision was reserved.
