HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Otago High Schools Board was held yesterday afternoon. Present were Mr J. Robertson (in the chair),, the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron), Miss E. Morton, Mrs D. G. McMillan, Messrs R. F. Barr and G. Stratton. , GRANTS APPROVED. Advice that a grant of £254 had been approved to cover the cost of extra furniture for the Otago Girls' High School was received from the Director of Education. The writer also inquired as to the position of the school with regard to accommodation for next year. The suggestion of limitation of enrolments was advanced, but the general opinion was that this should be avoided if at all possible. It was stated that the school would soon become unwieldy if the numbers increased to any extent, in which case the board would have to consider the establishment of another girls’ school on lines similar to the King’s High School. The Director of Education further advised that a grant of £76 10s had been approved for the purpose of covering the cost of additional tables and chairs for the King’s High School. PERMISSION GRANTED. Permission for the erection o*f a hut on property owned by the board on the Rock and Pillar Range with right of access thereto was granted during the pleasure of the board and subject to the conditions laid down by the lessee. TERMS FOR 1946. The following proposed dates of terms for 1946 were approved:—First term, February 4 to May 10; second term, May 28 to August 23; third term, September 17 to December 13. RECTOR’S REPORT. The Rector of the Otago Roys’ High School (Mr H. P. KidsoA) reported that the number on the school, .roll was 470. The Cadet artillery section had carried out a “ shoot ” with , live ammunition at Taiaroa Head with satisfactory results. The school had been visited by a number of speakers, who had addressed the boys.—The report was received. GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL.

The acting principal of the Otago Girls’ High School (Miss L. L. Lawson) stated in her report that the roll stood at 542. Since the last report 21 pupils had left the school and six had entered. Arbour Day had been recognised by the planting of trees in the school grounds. The sum oif £7 15s was raised from the sale of health stamps. —Received. KING’S HIGH SCHOOL. It was reported by the Rector of the King’s High School (Mr D. S. Chisholm) that the roll stood at 302. Since the last report had been submitted 16 boys had left and three had enrolled. Mi- IR. C. Tuck had returned from the Middle East, and would resume his duties at the school on November 5. A total of 75 trees had been planted .in the school grounds in connection with Arbour Dnv.—Received.
