GAMBIA AT TOKIO

OTAGO MEMBERS OF GREW FORMER SEA CADETS One of the cruisers in Tokio harbour for the signing of the peace with Japan is H.M.N.Z.S. Gambia, representing New Zealand. Among the personnel on this ship are 23 ex-Sea Cadets from'the Navy League (Otago Branch) Sea Cadet Corps. Over 130 boys who received their early training in the local corps have served in the Royal Navy or the merchant service during the war. The Sea Cadet Corps is not just a war-time organisation, states the Navy League, but is a permanent branch of tlte league activities, and is regarded as a reservoir from which H.M. ships and the merchant'service may draw recruits. The corps is an entirely voluntary organisation, and many of the cadets, although having received their early training in seamanship, do not necessarily take up either of the sea services as a career. Members of the Otago Division of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps were the guests of the management of the State Theatre for the screening of the Naval and Fleet Air Arm picture, ' Fighting Lady.' The producer of this picture is donating the net, proceeds to the Royal Navy Benevolent Funds and the cadets paraded through the main street on Friday evening as a token of appreciation. The Dunedin Highland Pipe Hand headed the parade.
