- »- • COMING FEATURES IN'STAR' SENSATIONAL HISTORIC DOCUMENTS OF THE WAR On Wednesday next the 'Star' will publish the first instalment of a highly sensational and illuminating historical document, of which it has secured the sole provincial rights. This is the record, written in Vichy and German prisons, of M. Paul Reynaud, Premier of France in the fateful summer of 1940. It is a frank exposure of the, reasons and factors governing the fall of France, revealing events and negotiations of which the world has so far gone in ignorance. Paul Reynaud makes intelligible in these ; memoirs some of the strangest events of history. The original intention was to commence the Reynaud chronicle to-night, but the dramatic collapse of Japan and the peace celebrations loosed such a flood of news that its preparation could not be completed. On the following Saturday, August 25, the ' Star * will publish the first instalment of another enthralling historical story, the diary of Count Ciano, ill-fated son-in-law of Mussolini and Foreign Secretary under the Fascist regime, His dally record, kept from 1939 to the date of his execution after the fall of Italy, furnishes highly dramatic evidence of the alternate pusillanimity and belligerence of II Duce, his tortuous efforts first to disentangle himself from the German alliance, and then, when all sail was set, to grab his share of the booty. It is an unlovely picture of master, man, and regime that Ciano limns, dramatic evidence of the rottenness of the Fascist State. It is proposed to publish the Ciano diaries, after the first instalment, on Tuesdays. Thursdays, and Saturdays; and the Reynaud records (after the first chapter) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays; these proposals subject, of course, to pressure on space, which is still very much restricted by the regulations.
