THANKSGIVING SERVICE

JEWISH SYNAGOGUE At a victory thanksgiving service held in the Dunedin Synagogue this morning an address was given by Mr J. B. Moss. "We'are assembled here to-day to offer grateful thanks to Almighty God for the deliverance of the world from the horror, sorrow, and desolation of the second world war." said the speaker, " and may the termination of these hostilities write finish to centuries of persecution and Jew hatred, which have been indiscriminately practised by a section of society with a bitterness so vile and degrading that the very thought of these atrocities pollutes these sacred Walls. Pray God the insane slaughter of men, women, and children has ended, never to begin again. In this hour of the triumph of right over might we havo a right to expect that the barriers ol bigoti'jy and intolerance shall be swept away. ... It will take ages to eliminate the tiger in man, but the great majority of the nations of the world are peace loving. Unfortunately, there are sections of nations, just as there are individuals in communities, to whom right and duty and fair dealing and purity of intention and purpose have little or no meaning. Therefore, civilisation cannot afford to throw away the means of self-preserva-tion, which experience and disaster havo found to be so necessary. The nations of the .world must cultivate the peace spirit, and provide congenial conditions for the healthy growth of that spirit. . . . -We have to cooperate with all shades of thought, and people if we would create a new world order. . . . To distrust and

jealousy let us apply the antidote oi' reason, intelligence, and understanding, and the clear purpose to do the right. Never was there so great a need for the nations of the world to seek and understand each other, to make allowances for mutual imperfections, and to curb the tendency of greed and selfishness. Let us dedicate our lives to the individual task of developing our higher self and the equally high collective ideal' of peace on earth and goodwill to all mankind."
