AMERICA'S PRISONERS

RETENTION FOR ESSENTIAL WORK (Rec. 11.5 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 27.' Able-bodied prisoners of war will be retained in the United States as long as American man power is not available to replace them in essential work. Announcing this, the War Department added that there were 421,291 Italian and German prisoners in the United States on June 1, of whom about 3,000 were sick, unfit, or wounded. These will be returned to Europe in the coming summer. Some 225,000 have been assigned to work in military or naval installations, and 155,000 assigned to agricultural work.
