RAIN AND SNOW HEAVY FALLS IN CENTRAL OTAGO When business premises closed at noon on Saturday citry workers believed that they were goinp; to enjoy the first fine week-end tor five weeks, but they suffered a disappointment in the middle of the , afternoon when heavy rain set in and continued intermittently during the week-end. More than three-quarters of an inch of rain fell in Dunedin and the suburbs during Saturday and Sunday and showers were experienced to-day. The weather turned very cold on Saturday afternoon and a thick coating of snow appeared on tho hills around the city. Several snowfalls occurred in the city yesterday, but they were accompanied by rain and the snow did not lie on the ground. The weather was cold, wet, and unpleasant throughout Otago and a good deal of snow fell in the back country. The Automobile Association (Otago) advised this morning that the Middlemarch road was impassable. Snow was lying at Deep Stream to a depth of about 2ft arid there were drifts of snow on several other parts of the road. The use. of chains by motorists was advised on the Palmerston-Ranfurly road, which had frozen overnight and was later covered by soft snow which made the surface very slippery. All motorists going to Centra] Otago were advised to use chains. Heavy snow was falling this morning at Qturehua. Tho main roads, both north and south, were clear to-day.
