Coincident with the announcement that Richmond Park had been reopened to the public after five years it was revealed that the reason for the closure was that the late Earl of Suffolk had a secret experimental station there for the examination of. unes•ploded bombs. The Earl of Suffolk was killed in 1941 when a huge bomb which had lain there for many months unexpectedly exploded. It also killed his woman secretary and a va'u driver. The Earl of Suffolk, who was fearless, did valuable research work which won him the George Cross.' He collected an immense amount of data for use by bomb disposal squads.
