IN GENOA

SWIFT FIFTH ARMY MANGE CAMPAIGN VIRTUALLY OVER GERMAN ARMIES ROUTED (Rec. 12.20 p.m.) LONDON, April 27. Fifth Army troops entered Genoa to-day. This is confirmed ' in a special communique from Allied headquarters in Italy, which says that an Allied task force entered Genoa this morning. Italian partisans had previously captured a large part of the city. The condition of the port is not yet ascertained. The ' Daily Express ' correspondent ■ays that the partisans, who joined the Allies in Genoa, have already pushed 20 miles westward and taken Savona. The communique added that troops of the Fifth and Eighth Armies are also crossing the Adige River *at _ many places, which will place them in the front of the enemy's Adige line behind the river. The entry into Genoa means that a SO-mile advance along 'the west coasi has been made since the Fifth Army «aptured Spezia on Tuesday. Allied coadquarter* officially stated that

strong enemy resistance is being met in some localities, but generally resistance is slight. The enemy on the Eighth Army front Las been unable to break off contact with the pursuing British forces sufficiently to enable him to reorganise his scattered and demoralised units.

Ths ' Daily Express ' correspondent says the partisans hold all the radio stations in Northern Italy, and also the entire Italian-Swiss frontier. The correspondent adds that the Italian campaign is virtually over, and the German armies are routed.

,lt is just a chase now, and we are finding more bridges intact, even capturing demolition teams on Jhe way to blow up bridges. There are fewer minefields because the Germans had no time to.lay them. We captured an entire supply train, and even a tank column trying to escape. It looks as though neither troops nor equipment will reach Bavaria in strength.

Eighth Army forces, spreading out rapidly over the whole of the Po Valley and industrial North. Italy, are approaching areas where Italian partisans are disrupting the German rear, report correspondents from Allied hedquarters. The Germans are apparently determined to stand on the Adige River, but only because this line is the only place where they have preprepared defences. The Allied air forces have begun a full-scale assault on the Adige line.
