—Air Passengers.—* Passengers from the north yesterday afternoon were Mr L. J. Stevens. Mr L. C. Laird, Miss F. Steinment (from Auckland), Mr F. S. Laycock (from Blenheim), Mr W. Wilbermoth, Mr J. H. Trethewey, Mr R. Collins (from Wellington), Mrs A. Steele, Ma Grounds (from Christchurch). Passengers for the north to-day were Mrs C. C. Mathais, Mr A. M. Satterthwaite (for Christchurch), Mrs J. Young, Mrs N. Turnbull, Mr V. Painter, Mr L. H. Brown, Mr F. Taylor, Mrs N. Luke, Captain S. Owens (for Wellington), Mr B. Smith (for Auckland).
Mr P. A. Smithells, superintendent of physical education for the Education. Department, left to-day on his return to Wellington. At a service held at St. Mary's Church in Timaru yesterday, the Rev W. W. Averill was instituted as Arch-deacon-of Timaru by the Primate of New Zealand, Archbishop West-Wat-son.
Major E. H. Halstead, who has terminated his appointment as official archivist with the N.Z.E.F. in -tho Middle East, has returned to New Zealand. His place has been taken' by Lieutenant W. G. McClymont of Dunedin.
At the annual re-union of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Returned Services' Association, Mr B. Orchard of Christchurch, was pre"sented with the gold star badge, and certificate of merit of the association. Mr Orchard was for many years a resident of Coal Creek Flat, Roxburgh. Cabled advice has been received thai; Sir Clive McPherson. has accepted an invitation to fill the vacancy on the board of directors of the National Bank of Australasia Ltd., Melbourne, caused by the death of General Sir Harry Chauvel. —Press Association.
The Acting Prime Minister", Hon. W. Nash, has received. the following message from Mr Joseph C. Grew, acting for the United States Secretary of State: "Mrs Roosevelt has asked me to convey to you and the people of New Zealand her great appreciation of your kind message of sympathy. She is deeply touched by the sentiments expressed in l your telegram and the great tribute you have paid to the late President." Mr N. E. Costar, of the Dominion Office, London, has arrived in Wellington on appointment as official secretary in the office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom.—Press Association. # ... ■ ~ According to advice received by the Air Department, Acting Group-captain U. Y. Shannon, of Wellington, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. His father is Mr U. Shannon, of Wellington.
