MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENTS

SECOMD-YEAR ADMISSIONS TERMS DEFINED The terms of admission of secondyear students to the Medical School next year were defined by the Otago University Council at its monthly meeting yesterday. The following recommendations were approved:— All applications for admission to sec-ond-year medical classes must be made on the prescribed form and must reach the registrar of the University of Otago by Monday, October. 1, 1945. Each candidate will be required to forward with his, application a certificate of medical suitability in such form as may be prescribed, and a certificate of good character signed by the principal of the school last attended, or by the liaison officer or a professor of the university college attended. The applications wil. be submitted to a committee of the Council of the Universityof Otago. The council, after consideration of the report of this committee, will decide whether any candidates should be refused admission on the ground of unsatisfactory character or medical unsuitability. After the elimination of candidates on the grounds of unsatisfactory character or medical unsuitability, candidates mill be accepted in accordance with the following priorities, acceptance in all cases being subject to the approval of the Department of National! Service: —(1) Servicemen whose university courses have been seriously interfered with by war service overseas, who have passed the necessary qualifying examinations but have not secured sufficient marks in.these examinations to permit of their admission in competition with other students. The-maxi-mum number to be admitted under this regulation shall be 30 (2) 'Registered medical students who have completed one year's attendance in the sec-ond-year classes in the Medical School but nave not passed the annual terms examination, provided they are approved for readmission by the council on the recommendation of the medical faculty, after full consideration of the

students' whole academic record. Students of the second-year classes for 1943 whose admission was recommended by the medical faculty and granted by the council, subject to .approval by the National Service Department, but who were not so approved by that department, will be readmitted to secondyear classes at the commencement of the session next following notification of the department's approval. (3) Graduates of the University of New Zealand who have passed the necessary qualifying examinations and are not required for the armed forees or for industry. (4) Candidates who have passed the medical examination selected in order of merit on the results of that examination.
