TRAGEDY FEARED

TWO YOUTHS MISSING (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 6. Two of three youths engaged in deer-stalking in South Westland are believed to have been drowned while 'fording the Burke River near its confluence with the Haast. The third had a narrow -escape. The victims were: — Patrick Hoy Smith, of Avonside Drive, Christchurch. James Radcliff, of Tancred street, Christchurch. The third youth secured hold of a jettisoned pack and managed to struggle ashore. When he reached the bank "there was no sign of Utadcliff, but Smith was swimming strongly some 10yds out. Evidently he failed to reach the bank, for no trace of him has been found. A search party left early this morning by pack horse.
