Statistical.—Rainfall; Balclutha :-The rainfall recorded in Balclutha for February totalled 3.12 in. Rain fell on 10 days, the heaviest fall (1.18 in) occurring on February 19. At Milton the rainfall was 3.55iri. Rain fell on 11 days, the heaviest fall (1.31 in) occurring on February 19. In February last year the Milton rainfall was 3.90 in, and 3.05 in in 1942. For the two months this year the rainfall has been 6.88 in, compared with 5.23 in last year, and 4.67 in in 1942. Vital statistics—Balclutha: Births, 9 (1944, 13); deaths, 7 (4); marriages, 1 (4). Milton : Births, 5 (6); deaths, 3 (4); marriages, 3 (3). Surf Life-saving.—Owing to heavy seas, due partly to the rush of flood waters, the Otago Surf Life-saving competitions to have beeii held at Kakii Point on Sunday had to.be abandoned, it being impossible to place the buoys. Five teams were taking part—St. Kilda (men), St. Clair (ladies and men), Balclutha (ladies and men). There was a fair attendance of the public. The weather was showery, and when opportunity offered beach races wejre run off. The Balclutha Pipe Band Was in attendance and headed the march past, which was quite an impressive spectacle. During the afternoon members of the St. Kilda team gave a demonstration of a six-men alarm, and St. Clair men a demonstration of the four-men alarm.

Cricket. —Clutha district league matches were played on Saturday. Grounds were heavy after-recent ram and the outfields were dead. At B<ilclutha, Football defeated Benh.ar by 21 runs, and thus kept up their unbeaten' record. Benhar made 77 (P. Jardiue, jun., 35). They lost six wickets for 17 runs. The best bowlers for Football were T. Hansen, two for 2, and W. Pennington, four for 14. Football made 98, passing their opponents' score with the fall of the seventh wicket. A. Plew retired with 30 on. Bowling for Benhar, R. Maaka took four for 4. At Stirling, Freezer-Flax defeated the home team by one run. The combined team made 88 (R. Davey 31). Bowling for Stirling C. Whiteford took thiee for 0, 6. Macdonald two for 5. The team had one down for 32 and lour down for 47. Stirling made 87 (A. Barron 44, G. McDonald 31). The first wicket fell for 2. and Barron and McDonald carried on to 68 before the partnership was broken. Bowling for combined 1. Keach took three tor 15, G. Hansen four for 5.
