RACING

BANKS PENINSULA IMMEDIATE BEATS GOLDEN SOUVENIR The Banks Peninsula Racing Club held its summer meeting at Riccarton on Saturday in fine weather, and there >vas a good attendance. The trade was in perfect order. The totalisator handled £68,751, compared with £36,450 10s last year, when the meeting was run in wet weather.

The meeting was up to metropolitan standard, and, with a substantial totalisator turnover, the club should collect a good profit. Investors fared reasonably well, and there were only' two double-figure dividends. Hostile Demonstration.

. The Vulture provided the only sensation of the day by failing badly in the High-weight event, for which he was a staunch favourite, and, going otic in the concluding event as fifth choice, he had the easiest win of the meeting. There was a hostile demonstration when he returned, and this continued for some time after he entered the birdcage. The stewards were called together to give the owner and trainer of The Vulture an opportunity to explain his improved running, and their explanations were accepted. . Big Event. >

The chief event, the Peninsula Handicap, was won in an attractive manner by Atreus, owned in Christchureh, but trained for some time past at Wingatui. He ran to the front about seven furlongs from home and led into the straight clear of Gunga Din, Foxleap, and! The Raker, with Night Pal and Pal-

frey making up ground lost in the early stages. Foxleap finished very solidly, but had no chance with Atreus, who was .Confidently ridden throughout the run home. Gunga Din was a head away, two lengths.clear of Beau.Cheval, Chicago, Whaekie, and Gamble.

Spectacular Effort. I Immediate was responsible for a spectacular effort in winning the Kinloch Handicap—his first ' effort since last winter. Nur.nie acted as pacemaker from the early stages, and led into the straight, but did not last, and Pensacola took charge a little further tin. Immediate then came from the middle of the field and soon placed the issue beyond any doubt. Golden Souvenir made up a lot of leVway in the run home, and gained second money from Wise Girl in the last few strides. Monetary was a length away in front of Pensacola and First In. Then came Nurnie, Foxhaven, Fairy Rnrrl. and Joygiver. s

Blanket Fmish. A feature of the day's racing was a blanket finish in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, four horses crossing the line almost on level terms. Centime was first into the straight from Prize Ring, Lyndon Lea . Doublecross, Burberry, and Night Believer. Doublecross soon joined Centime and Burberry, and then drew past them, but nearing the post the trio were practically in line with Night Believer joining in an exciting tussle. Doublecross gained a half-head verdict from Centime, who beat Burberry by half a head, while Night Believer, on the rails, was a head back. There was then a gap to Hamish. Afiss Myra. Lyndon Lea, and Prize Ring. Brilliant Run.

The Bradley Stakes, for maiden two, three, and four-year-olds, attracted a big field, and was wone well by the Choke-bore filly, a two-year-old by Solicitor General from Stout-Heart, dam of Foxleap. Whitley went to the front inside the final furlong, and appeared to be in for a comfortable win, but Fearless tackled him with a brilliant run. and got ud on the line to gain a head verdict. Lexia, who led into the straight, was a close third, in front of Cinderella and Bruce together.

Decisive Win. The Oamaru-trainecl Eastern Coin had to put up a solid performance to win the Terawera High-weight Handicap. He was a good way from the leaders turning for home, but drew to the front a furlong from the post, and carried on for a decisive win. Olga's Choice also put in some telling work" iu the straight to gain second money, while. Scottish Lad, last for the first half of the journey, got up for third, a head in front of Chellow Dene and Twelve Pointer, together. The favourite, The Vulture, drifted to a rear position passing the mile post, and was not again prominent, finishing well . back in sixth place. Unpopular.

. Desert Strife led into the straight in the Parkinson Hack Handicap, but weakened inside the final furlong, and Lex, Tikakoura, Truewayr* and Silver Sal carried on. These were fighting out the finish when The Vulture drew past them, and, continuing his run, had a very easy win from Falconbridge, who held off a late run by Authentic. Tikakoura was two lengths away, in front of Trueway, Silver Sal. arid Riding Home. The Trots.

The Wairewa Trot was run in two divisions. In the first, Loyal Chief led into the straight from Iron Bar, Margaret Hall, Sand Maid, and Dunamis, but Margaret Hall drew away to the front inside the final furlong and won well from Loyal Chief, with Iron Bar a close third, in front of Dunamis. Worthy Jack led throughout the second division, and was slowing up at the finish to have a wide margin from Cry Baby, who, after being slow away, finished from well back to. get a head verdict on the post from Chinook, who also was slow away from the back mark. Commander Scott headed the remainder.

Real Nugget went to the front after half a mile had been covered in the
