NEW IRRAWADDY BRIDGEHEAD

CAMERON HIGHLANDERS' EXPLOIT (Rec. 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, March 4. '■' British Second Division troops established a bridgehead over the Irrawaddy, 30 miles downstream from Mandalay, on the night of February 24, says a correspondent. This is the nearest crossing to Mandalay yet made. The initial landing attempt by a Worcestershire regiment failed when Japanese bullets tore holes in their canvas boats, which sank. The first landing was made by the Cameron Highlanders in the face of intense ma-chine-gun fire. (Reinforcements of men and tanks are now across, and the bridgehead is firmly held and expanding rapidly. This news was %vithheld for security reasons.
