FLEMINGTON MEETING

OUTSIDER WINS NEWMARKET MELBOURNE, March 4. Outsiders gained all the places in the Newmarket Handicap, run at Fleinington yesterday, and a rank outsider, Wonder Bird, a maiden, who had never shown anything to suggest that he was a Newmarket possibility, was beaten for first place only in the last. 50yds by Three Wheeler, whose stablemate Simmering filled third position. Well-backed horses shaped poorly. Three Wheeler was well back early, but, moving up rapidly halfway through the race, was in the first halfdozen with a furlong and a-half to go. It did not seem as if he would get up in time, but Wonder Bird tired suddenly and Three Wheeler finished with electrifying speed.

The St. Leger went to New Yorker, who raced to the front about a mile from home and scored an easy victory. A rattling finish enabled Xestor to win the Sires' Produce Stakes from Don Pedro and Lincoln.

The principal result was as follows: — Newmarket Handicap, £2,000. of. Three Wheeler (Manitoba Tricycle) 8.2 (Williamson) 1. Wonder Bird (Manitoba—Vocal) 6.7 (Fitzgerald) 2, Simmering (Hellerport—Geyser) 8.9 (Breasley) 3. Twenty-six started. Half a length; neck/ Time, 1.125. The winner ia trained by Lou Robertson.
