Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Feb. 24. Moscow radio announced the death of Alexei Tolstoy, the well-known Russian writer and member of the Supreme Soviet.
[Alexei Mikolaevich Tolstoy, Russian novelist and playwright, the third to bear this illustrious name, was by birth a nobleman, though he had long since disavowed the title of count, and was distantly related through his father to the great Leo Tolstoy. His first appearance in the field of literature was in 1908, when he published a brochure of poems, and a year later he published his first prose work, which was to be the beginning of a notable career as an author. During the first World War Tolstoy was military correspondent for the ‘ Russian News.’ In the, revolution he fought on the White side, and in 1919 settled in France. He returned to the Soviet Union in, 1921, where lie remained to write prolifically. In 1937 Tolstoy was elected deputy from Leningrad province in the Supreme Soviet of the U.S.S.R. . He was one of the most popular living novelists ill the Soviet Union.]’
