The Hon. J. A. Hanan, Chancellor of the University of New Zealand, left this morning for Wellington. The Hon. M. Connelly, M.L.C., left this morning for Wellington. Messrs W. J. Winefield, J. H. Kirkwood, J. Mowat, F. Goodwin, and A. V. Gain left this morning for Wellington to attend a meeting of the council of the Dominion Carriers' Federation. Mr A. L. S. Cassie left for Wellington this morning to attend, a meeting of Consolidated Importers. Mr F. Baker, Director of Rehahilitation, and Mrs Baker, arrived from the north by' the express yesterday. Mr Baker is spending a holiday in the south, and will leave for Queenstown to-morrow. '

Mr Alex. M. Kilgour, formerly of Dunedin, has been transferred from the Collins street branch of the Commercial Bank to the head office at Wellington. Formerly a member of the commercial staff of the ' Otago Daily Times ' Company, Mr Kilgour has had rapid promotion since joining the Commercial Bank at Dunedin. -

Advice, has been received in Wellington that the United States Bronze Star Medal has been awarded by Majorgeneral Griswold, commanding general of the 14th United States Army Corps, to Major Merrill Moore, of the United States Army Medical Corps. The award is made at the direction of President (Roosevelt for " meritorious achievements in connection with military operations against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific." Major Moore is well known in Wellington, where for a good many months he was attached to an American naval hospital, and in Auckland, where he served at the United States Army Hospital and with the United States Army Air Corps. Before the war he was a leading psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School and Boston Citv Hospital. In view of the pending departure from Dunedin of Mr T. E. Holmes, who has for several years been stationed in this district as chief detective, and who is being transferred on promotion 'to Christchurch, the Mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) took occasion to-day to entertain Mr Holmes at morning tea in the Mayor's room at the Town Hall. There were also present representatives of the police force, the city council, the Press, ex-mayors, and the Corporation Traffic Department. It was a very happy, informal gathering, at which highly complimentary references were made hy several speakers to the kindly, courteous, and helpful attitude which Mr Holmes had, always exhibited towards those with whom he had come in contact,. officially or otherwise, during his term of office in Dunedin. The Mayor also took the opportunity of thanking the Police Department generally for its assistance in matters of civic import which came under its notice from time to time. Mr Holmes will leave for Christchurch by the : express on Thursday morning. A Wellington Association message' states that the Consul for the Netherlands at Wellington has received! cabled advice from the Netherlands Government that Queen Wilhelmina has bestowed the Order of the Knight of Orange-Nassau on Mr C. W. Heather, managing director of Russell and Somers Limited, Auckland, in recognition of valuable services rendered to Netherlands shipping over a .period of many years. Russell Somers Limited are the" agents for a number of Netherlands shipping lines. Guests at the Excelsior Hotel include Mr J. Cossen, Mr J. Lovelock (Melbourne), Mr R. Corbett. Mr and Mrs W. H.
