RACING GOSSIP

[By The Critic] The New Zealand Cup Acceptors. As anticipated in my notes last week, the chief defections when the first acceptance for *the New Zealand Cup was taken would be those who had really been flattered by a nominatioii in such an important handicap, and seven of the nine not paid up for were handicapped on the minimum. Of the 24 handicapped above 7.0 only two, Tara King and Sair Standfast dropped out, and the 11 at the top of the handicap were paid up for—an outstanding tribute from owners on Mr Russell's assessments.

The following are the breeding and ages of the 32 who remain in the field, together with.the sires of their dams:—

(Spring Kop) ... 1 0 : Light Harness Stock Sale. > Not the least interesting feature of. the t New Zealand Trotting Cup carnival was tho' 1 first national sale of trotting and pacing- • bred yearlings and two-year-olds held in L Christchurch yesterday, when 50 fashion-ably-bred lots were offered. The inaugura- \ tion of these sales will be greatly appreci- • ated by, breeders of light-harness stock. Racing on a Large Scale. . Miss Dorothy Paget, who during the years I of the present war has ousted the Aga Khan from tho position of the biggest owner of racehorses in England, and last season headed the list of winning owners I in that country, also won 23 races in Ireland, Some idea of the scale on which sho l races may be obtained from the fact that at the last Leopardstown cross-country meeting she had no fewer than 48 entries. Mares in the Cup, Though mares have won seven out of the last dozon contests for the New Zealand Cup, only four are engaged in this year's race, headed by last year's winner, Classform, who has been allotted 7.11. The others are Foxleap- 7.5 and Capronella .and Silver Com each 7.0. Cuddle is the only one of the seven winners represented in this year's race,.Gamble being the first of her progeny, but Serenata, winner of the 1940 Cup, has a full brother in Representative engaged. A New Method of Shoeing. Research work in England during the past few years has not been confined only to scientific things which will worry the Nazis. An English firm has perfected a new method of shoeing racehorses. Theso shoes are manufactured from flexible rubber or rubber-like compounds without metal reinforcement, and the weight is comparable with that of ahiminium plates, and affords a secure grip on all kinds of surfaces. Light-weight Food for Light-weights. Many of our leading jockeys have a great difficulty in keeping down their weights, and often have to "go short" before a meeting. A cable from New York this week mentions new foods that have been invented by Japanese chemists for their soldiers, and one of them, described as only one-eighth in volume, might appeal to our light-weights. It is claimed " that persons who eat this for a week digest it so completely that there is no waste, and they no longer conii»fain of hunger." Perhaps they are no longer able to complain! Four-year-olds in Cup. Only two four-year-olds survived the first acceptance for the Cup, a race that last century was an attraction to owners of three-year-olds, several of that ago being returned' Winners. They are Langue d'Or, by Lang Bian from Princess Doreen, who also produced two good ones in Doria and Royal Writ, and Longsword, also by Lang Bian, and from Spionetta, dam of several useful sprinters, and also of Alpine, engaged in this year's race on the minimum, but, like Longsword, has yet to run out of hack class. Last season Longsword had only one start, and in a eix-furlong race at Trentham trailed the field all the way. Answer to Inquiry, A correspondent asks if Te Monanui ever won the Auckland or Wellington CupsP The answer is no. In the Auckland Cup of 1925, with 8.7, he finished third to Rapine 9.8 and Count Cavour 8.13, and next year with 9.1 third to Tanadees 8.0 and Count Cavour 9.5. In .1926 To Monanui 9.1 finished second to Enthusiasm 8.0 in the Wellington Cup, Star Stranger 7.11 being third; and next year .with 9.3 was again second, Rapier 7.8 winning and Rapine 10.2 was third. The weights Te Monanui carried iu these important handicaps indicates what a* high-class racehorse he was. Time Record for Two Miles, When the official time, 3.25, was posted after Bridge won the New Zealand Cup in 1910 he established a time record of which the correctness was doubted, and it was not until Royal Star won in 1921 that his record was equalled. When Palantua won in 1933 in 3.22 1-5 she established the time rncord for the race, but Serenata smashed this in 1941 when she recorded 3.20 4-5.

These two mares, who carried only 7.2 and 7.0 respectively, hold the honour of recording the best times over two miles. The Australian record for the distance is held by Spear Chief, who carried 9.7 and won at Brisbane in 3.19JJ. Publishing Dividends, One of the clauses in our Gaming Act that very few interested in reading racing reports agree with, and there are many non-racing persons who do" read racing news, is the prohibition of publishing dividends. Australian sporting journals, admitted to New Zealand, publish the dividends paid on our important races, and the cabled reports to papers.- published overseas for our troops also include dividends. Why 'this secrecy in the Dominion, when the information can be obtained a few minutes after a race is run by ringing up those who make lucrative livings at the illegal game? Looking for Stamina. In looking for the winner of a two-mile race it is often profitable to look back through the dams' side of pedigrees to find reliabie and family inheritance of stamina. Cuddle, the dam of Gamble and winner of two Auckland Cups and New Zealand Cup, is by Psychology from the Martian mare Caress, and through the latter traces back to St. Simon and Bend Or. April Fool, the dam of Lambourn, is by Chief Ruler, a good stayer arid great racehorse over all distances, from an imported mare named Miss Cute, by a sire of good stayers in

England, Charles O'Malley. April Fool is also the dam of Beaupartir, and Gulf Stream, winner of this season's Winter Cup. Praise, the dam of Representative, was a very high-class sprinter, by Limond from that famous mare Eulogy, who founded one of the best families to be found in the Stud Book. Praise, who traces back to the Galopin family, also produced Serenata, a New Zealand Cup winner, who, like Representative, is by Nightmarch, both a Melbourne and New Zealand Cups winner. Early Favourites. , Glenfalloch is the ruling favourite for the New Zealand Cup, but one has to look a long way back to find an early favourite returned the winner. In the Cup of 1937 Fersen started favourite on both machines and won, and Cerne Abbas followed suit next year. In 1938 Sly Fox started favourite, but did not finish in the first seven. In tho next contest Royal Chief was maae a warm first selection, and finished fourth, and the following year he was again more than twice as well supported as the second choice, but finished fifth. In the bcttnij; on the 1941' Cup Lambourn was made a much better first favourite than Night Pa«, but fourth was as near as he could pet, and Night Pal finished last. Two years ago the bracketed pair, Gladynev and Don Quex, were preferred to Royal Lancer. Tho latter won and Gladynev was second. Last year Representative was backed down to short prices on both machines, and in a blanket finish was lucky to be placed second instead of fourth/the winner being the outsider Classform.
