RACING

NEWS AND VIEWS Amorlad was one of the last horses to finish in the Whyte Handicap at Trentham. Considering the number of hurdles Boloyna hit in the Trentham Hurdles, he did well to finish eighth, says the Christchurch 'Star.' The first time he gets round without making any serious mistakes he will win. Kinsman is now trained at Awapuni by R Beale, whose only other horse at present is Anglo-Irish. Kinsman looked remarkably well on Tuesday, and is a place possibility in the Parliamentary Handicap. Kinsman has only had one race since ha was a. close third in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie. There is a possibility of Immediate contesting both his races on Saturday, as this will be his last opportunity to run out his hack engagements. Should he win the first race, he will probably be penalised 71b, making his weight 9.11 for the second event, but he is a little above the ordinary, especially in soft going, and he is quite capable of winning both races. Platform is credited with making a sensational finishing run into third place in the Whyte Handicap, and he must be given a first-class chance over the mile and three furlongs of the Parliamentary Handicap next Saturday. The Night Raid gelding won the Parliamentary last year. , The Canterbury Jockey Club has made some changes in the dates for publication of handicaps for the Grand National meeting. Weights for the Grand National Steeplechase, Winter Cup, and Grand National Hurdles will be published next Monday, and weights for other events on the first day ou Monday, July 31. Southland and Prince Gractan, who gave L. A. Maidens a winning double, at the patriotic meeting, have done particularly well since going into the New Brighton trainer's stable. Both pacers have coma through a solid season's racing. Prince Grattan has started 16 times for four wins and a third, and when Southland won he was making his tenth start since last August. • Mr B. Grice, who heads the list of winning owners this season, owes £3,675 of his total of £5,025 to the earnings of Haughty. Other contributors have been Hardy Oak £895, Poker Face £245, Lady Maxine £l5O, and Traverse £6O.

"Although he is not the Dominion's leading trainer of the season in the number of. races wen, F. Smith probably has been the most successful in the amount of stake money earned. No fewer than 16 horses from his stable have earned something in stakes, and between them they have accounted for £17,688. The principal contributor has been Lord Chancellor, with £5,350. Smith's success has been remarkable in view of the fact that racing has been restricted.

The Trentham trainer, W. H. Hume, lias had an extraordinary run of ill-luck in the ballots held by the Wellingtoon Racing Club. Prior to the acceptance for the first day of the Wellington meeting Hume had been concerned in ballots there on four occasions and his horses had been balloted out. Last week it was necessary to ballot one horse out of the Woburn Handicap. Our Jock was the one thus eliminated, and he is a member of Hume's team. The record of being " outed " five times in liive ballots is surely one that will'not be easily equalled. Royal Flight has won some good races in her two seasons of racing, but the Whyte Handicap . was her biggest prize in point of view of stakes. Her success on Saturday was worth '£7oo to her owner, Mr D. M. Tweedie, president of the Riverton Racing Club. She has now won £2,640 in stakes and trophies, and her owner also holds the J. B. Reid Challenge Cup valued at £IOO. Royal Flight's earnings this season total £1,905. She has contested ]4 races for six firsts and two thirds. Her classic successes include the Welcome Stakes (two-year-old), the John Grigg Stakes, and the Dunedin Guineas. Various opinions are held concerning the Dominion's best steeplechaser of all time. Some of the oldest of old timers vote for The Agent, and most sportsmen of a later day plump for Coalition. The moderns would record a majority vote for Clarion Call, who was weighted at 13.2 in the Auckland Winter Steeplechase.
