McAlevey), was charged with stealing one towel, valued at 10s, the property of Thelma Stone. In asking for a, remand for a week, Detective-sergeant J. Gibson said there were at least two other matters for investigation by the police. When counsel asked for bail, the detective sergeant said the accused had no fixed abode. Leslie Raymond West, a motor driver, aged 37 (Mi O. G. Stevens) pleaded guilty to stealing 25 sacks valued at £1 4s 3d. the property of the Crown Milling Company Ltd. . , . On May 4 he was observed removing 25 secondhand sacks without authority, when taking a load of flour. It was later found that he had taken them to the Dunedin Bag Depot to be sold on his own account. Similar thefts had occurred at' the mill- before. Since March 30, West had sold 90 sacks 4 which he claimed he had obtained honestly. The police had no evidence to the contrary. Mr Stevens said West had been deserted by his wife. He supported his aged mother and invalid brother. It was an isolated case of dishonesty. The accused was fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment.
