A GERMAN WITHDRAWAL EIGHTH ARMY TAKES UP NEW POSITIONS (Rec. 11 a.m.) RUGBY, May 9. Quickly following up a German withdrawal in the thinly-held Majella Mountains Eighth Army forces have taken up new forward positions, says Reuter's correspondent at Allied headquarters. The German withdrawal occurred over the week-end in the area of th« villages of Palena and Lettopaleua, about 27 miles from the Adriatic coast. The advancing Eighth Army troops were hampered by demolitions and did not make contact with the enemy, who blew up bridges, houses, and tunnels in the area. It was quieter yesterday in the upper Garigliano Valley after week-end activity, while patrol clashes occurred in the lower Garigliano Valley south-west of Castelforte. It is generally quiet in tne -Ynxio beachhead. German artillery and mortars in the Cassino area hammered against the railway station where our troops are dug ili on the southern edge of the town.
