CHINESE COUNTER-OFFENSIVE ALLIED BOMBERS BUSY (Rec. 11 a.m.) CHUNGKING, May 9 The Chinese have launched a successful counter-offensive south of Loyang and have driven the Japanese back across the Yiyi River, say field daspatches. The Yiyi River is a tributary of the Yellow River, seven miles from lioyang. The Chinese Press claims that a Japanese force on the- night of May .'1 was wiped out while attempting to cross the Yellow (River from Shansi. 45 miles north-east of Loyang. General Stihvell's communique reports that Chinese and American airmen concentrated their operations in the Yellow River area against .troops and vehicles to the rear of the enemy lines, causing many casualties and destroying and damaging many trucks. Chinese and American bombers, with fighter escort, raided Hankow aerodrome, setting fire to installations and causing large explosions. Thirty enemy aircraft attempted interception, and several were shot down.

QUESTION OF RESTITUTION

RUGBY, May 8. Mr Churchill has appointed a committee to be at the service of the British Government in connection with post-war restitution of monuments, works of art, and archives misappropriated by enemy*'Governments or individuals in the course of the war. The committee, according to a Downing Street statement, will co-operate with the United States Commission already appointed and with like bodies that may be set up in other Allied countries. It will consider and advise on the technical problems of restitution and possibly of reparation in kind. Among those who will serve on the committee are Lord MacMillan (chairman), Sir John Clapham (formerly professor of economic history at Cambridge University), Sir \ Kenneth Clark (director of the National Gallery), Sir Frederick Kenyon (formerly director of the British Museum), Mr Vincent Massey (Canadian High Commissioner), Professor G. M. Trevelyan (a trustee of the British Museum), and the Duke of Welington.
