MAN POWER APPEALS

SITTING OF COMMITTEE The Industrial Man-power Appeal Committee—Messrs M. \V. Grantham, A. McCrae, and H. Gillard—held a sitting to-day to hear appeals against the direction of the district man-power officer (Mr J. ; H. Flowers) placing essential workers in industry. Aii'appeal against a direction that'Miss Christina Joyce Mackay should accept employment as a waitress at the Savoy Restaurant was allowed on the application of her father, Mr Dougal S. Mackay, his grounds for objecting to her acceptance pf this position being that she was required'for domestic duties. Miss Mackay agreed to accept part-time employment as -a. waitress. -.-- .1 ■■■..,-.- ; ■■ -••> The committee reserved its decision, pending a medical report, after hearing aii appeal by Miss Eileen P. M. NewalT, an employee of Ernest Adams Ltd., against her direction to G. H. Ferguson Ltd. as an experienced mechanist. On the grounds of ill-health, an appeal was lodged by Mr H. Clarke for his daughter, Miis Jean Fdith Clarke, against her direction from her present employment at the D.I.C. Ltd. to a position as a wardsmaid at the Public Hospital.—The committee reserved its decision pending the production of a medical report. Miss M. E. Flint, an employee of Macdiiffs Ltd., appealed for medical reasons and on the grounds of an alleged breach of faith, against her direction as an experienced mechanist to the clothing factory of H. 8.. Ltd,—The man-power officer: said that in Dunedin there were about 150 clothing machines idle and labour was. badly needed. —The committee reserved, its decision. ~..-•■' • Stating that he wished to obtain wider experience .of the trade, .Raymond Peter Ward, a. butcher's assistant, appealed against 'the refusal, of permission sought by him to terminate his employment with E. T Jensen Ltd. (represented by Mr G. V. : Murdoch) in orderv.-to- accept similar-work' with J. E.
