JAPANESE ATTACKING
MANIPUR HILLS FRONT ATTEMPT TO REGAIN LOST POSITIONS (Rec. 10 a.m.). LONDON, May 8. The Japanese are taking the offensive on all sectors on the Manipur Hills front, states a Southeast Asia communique. They are strongly counter-attacking to regain the forward positions lost recently. The enemy in every case is suttering disproportionately heavy losses. ' Allied patrols from Imphal Plain penetrated to 28 mile's north of Impha] on the Kohima road. The Exchange Telegraph's New Delhi correspondent says a report from thu Imphal front states ■that Japanese resistance at Kohima is stiffening. A South-east Asia communique states that no material change has occurred in the neighbourhood of Kohima. where heavy fighting continues. ""We repulsed a heavy Japanese attack on the Palel road and inflicted considerable losses. South of Imphal," continues the communique, " we attacked and captured an enemy position. -Minor clashes occurred west of Bishenpore, involving hand-to-hand' fighting in which the enemy suffered severely."
