FIVE-DAY WEEK
OPERATION IN AUCKLAND JULY 1 LATE SHOPPING NIGHT RESTORED (P.A.) " AUCKLAND, May 8. A five-day week for ' many retail establishments in the Auckland metror politan area is expected to come into force on July 1. The late shopping night will therefore be restored onFriday. June 30, and the last day on which the trades concerned will remain open on Saturday morning is June 24. The inauguration of the new order will first require the revoking of the existing regulations made in January, 1942, governing the closing hours of shops on late nights. The businesses concerned are grocers, drapers, and allied trades, including retail footwear and furnishing stores. The chief opposition . to|the change has concerned the grocers, but the shopkeepers and their assistants consider' that the restoration of the late shopping night will meet these objections. The position regarding chemists*! shops is still not determined. It ha» been claimed on the one hand that it ia essential for the convenience and health of the public that dispensing facilitie* should be available on Saturday morning, but, on the other hand, it is represented hv the assistants that the additional staffing of the late night pharmacies on a roster basis would make, ttna same service available by the attendance of each qualified dispenser iq the city | on one'Saturday of the year.
