RUGBY UNION

A DECISION REVERSED ONGLEY'S TRANSFER GRANTED Mr W. J. Pearson presided over the fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union, Which was held last night, when the previous 'decision refusing P. A. Ongley V application for a transfer for Pirates t-> University was reversed. The Training College Club wrote asking that its senior team be allowed to stand down on the next two Saturdays.—lt was pointed out that there was an existing rul<.< which precluded the granting of more than one bye to a club in each season, awl it was decided to inform the Training College to this effect. MOTION RESCINDED. Mr P. A. Ongley wrote asking that the matter of his transfer from Pirates m University be reopened and his application be heard on the ground of hardship. A letter was also received from the University Club stating that " blues" had been 10. instituted at Otago University, and unless Ongley was permitted to play with its team this year he would lose the opportunity of gaining his football " blue," as this would be his last year in Dunedin. Th« letter added that Ongley would be filtering camp with the medical outfit, and would not be able to train with Pirates. Ongley appeared in parson to support his application. He would, he said, b» in camp for four playing Saturdays, and would be able to practice while tbero with University, but not with Pirates. He would also find it difficult to attend practice in July because of his duties at tba Public Hospital. On Mr Ongley retiring, considerable discussion took place, Mr D. M. Spedding expressing the opinion that, as there was a rule governing such matters and a principle was involved, the previous decision °f the committee to refuse the transfer should be adhered to. He moved that Mi Ongley's application be declined. . Mr H. Harris said that it was a matter for the committee to decide whether hardship was involved in this case. If Ongley was unable to" attend practices, then it was for the Pirates Club to say whether he would be included in its team. Mr V. G. Cavanagh: If Pirates can find a place for Ongley in its team there can be no question of hardship; if they cannot, then the application comes under that clause. Mr I. Grant thought that the position as affecting transfers of University students was different from that affecting other players, and that the matter should be considered in that -light. After further discussion Mr Spedding's motion was put and lost on a show of hands.

The standing orders were then suspended by consent of the meeting, the previous motion refusing the transfer was rescinded, and a motion passed granting the transfer asked for. SOUTH OTAGO SUB-UNION. The South Otago Sub-union wrote expressing a desire to send a team to .Dunedin on a Saturday when a town team might be available to play it. It was decided to offer South Otago a match with University Combined Faculties next Saturday, as the latter's fixture with Training College would not be played on that day. If South Otago accepted, the match would be played as a curtain-raiser at Cansbrook. JUNIOR REP. MATCH. The Junior Advisory Committee, in a report to fhe meeting, suggested that a match sliomd be arranged for a junior representative team, preferably from the thiud grade, and it was agreed that an endeavour should be. made to do this, and that the Ad'risory Committee be asked to appoint a selection committee for the purpose of choosing the team. The Advisory Committee also suggested that curtain-raisers should, as often as poasib,e. be matches between third grade teams. SCHOOLBOY PLAYERS. The committee which had been asked to consider the possibility of rearranging secondary and primary school fixtures so" as to enable some of the secondary school boys to play in grade matches where clubs were short of players, reported that the principals of the secondary schools were strongly opposed to the changing of the day upon which their boys played from Friday to Wednesday, but in the case of outlvinsr dis. tricts. such as Mosgiel and Port Chalmers arrangements might be made which would allow two or three bovs to make up shortages in the local sides. It was decided to notify the outside clubs "■oncerned to this effect. DRAW FOR SATURDAY.
