SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

(Own Correspondent.) Personal.—A very happy evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs Allan Stewart, Balclutha, on Saturday, when a large number of friends met to welcome home Sergeant Ivan Stewart (R.N.Z.A.F.) and his bride. During the course of the evening Superintendent G. MunVo, on behalf of the Balclutha Fire Brigade, presented the couple with two cushions, and L.A.C. M. McCorkindale made a monetary presentation on behalf of friends. Sergeant Stewart suitably acknowledged. Sergeant Stewart recently returned on furlough from the Pacific. —Prior to leaving (he Stony Creek district, where they have resided for over 25 years, Mr and Mrs James Collier were the guests at a farewell function held in the Lovell's Flat Hall. They have gone to Mosgiel. There was a large attendance, and during the course of preceedings Mr D. Johnston made a monetary (presentation and extended best wishes for the future.— Mr N. Traves, station master at Milburn, has been appointed to a similar position at Temuka, his place being filled by Mr McLean, of Temuka.—Miss M. H. Kirkpatrick, who has been senior mistress at Kaitangata School for the past three years, and who has been appointed to Mornington School, was, prior to her departure, the recipient of a framed photograph from the Kaitansata School staff and a leather handbag from the pupils. . Golf.—Following were the best cards handed in in a medal round played by Balclutha Men's Club on Saturday:—A grade: I R. Guest 83—14—69, E. L. Egarr 88-18 70, L. Edwards 86—14—72. J. Clark 80—6— 74, W. Jolly 86—12—74, O. R. Throp 90— 16—74, D. M. Frengley 87—12—75. B grade: W. Sutherland 89—22—67, W. L. Dodds 90 —2o—-70. At the annual meeting of Balclutha Ladies' Golf Club the following office-bearers were elected :—President, Mrs J. Landels; vice-president, Mrs G. Sinclair: captain, Mrs A. Aitken; vice-captain, Mrs A. L. Allan; secretary, Miss Martin; handicap manager, Mrs E. L. Egarr; commit', tee—Mesdames A. Baxter, C. Gibb. and J Freeman. Football.—As a result of the release of petrol at the last minute on Saturday, several matches were played in South Otago. At Balclutha Clutha seniors and Owaka tried conclusions, and a somewhatragged game resulted in a win for the home team by 22 points to 6 points. At ' Benhar Freezer played Star, the result being a win for Freezer by 12 points to 3 points. Clutha juniors travelled to Kaitangata and played Crescent, the home team winning by 18 points to 3 points in a game which was much more even than the scores indicate. Next Saturday's draw is: Senior—Toko. v. Freezer, at Balclutha: Valley v. Star, at Clydevale; Clutha v. Crescent, at Kaitangata; Clinton v. Owaka. at Owaka. Junior—High School v. Crescent, at Kaitangata, 1.30; Clutha v. Toko., at Milton. It is expected that an announcement will be made this week regarding petrol for the carrying on of the various sports in country districts.—Playing at Milton on Saturday, Clutha Valley and Toko, had a drawn game. Burn scored two tries for Toko., and Valley's score was made up of a try and a penalty goal kicked just on time.

Basketball.—A grade: Clinton 28, Clutha A 2; Ex-High A 15, School B 10; School A 19, Hospital 5. B grade: School C 19, Clutha B 10; School D 17, Ex-High B 11. Shooting.—Many shooters were out for the opening on Saturday. Game was plentiful, but hard to get, although several limit bags were secured in the vicinity of the Kaitangata lakes. Those who were out on Sunday met with better luck, and report good conditions and plenty of game. Obituary.—The death took place in Dunedin on Sunday of Mr Donald (" Danny ") Munro, at the ase of 92 years. The late Mr Munro was very well known throughout the Clutha district. For some years he engaged in farming at Toiro, and over 40 years ago came to Balclutha, where he carried on a coal and carrying business for a lengthy period. He then engaged hi droving, and was a popular figure on the road. He was interested in dog trials and other sport, and had a host of friends. A few years iago he went to Dunedin. His wife predeceased him by some years, and there is no family.—The death took place at Milton on Monday morning of Mrs Jane Dickson, widow of Mr John Dickson, who for many years carried on business as a builder and cabinetmaker in the Toko, centre. She was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, 88 years ago, and came to New Zealand when quite young. She took up residence in Milton, where she was married anil lived till her demise. She is survived by one daughter and three sons—Mrs M. ;H. Hatton (Palmerston North), Messrs James (Sydney), Bert (Upper Hutt), ind Harry (Hinds, Ashburton). —Mr George Cooper, who died at. Milton on Friday at the age of 69, was the third son of the late Mr and Mrs John Cooper, early : residents of Waitahuna Gully, where he was born and educated. On leaving school he engaged in gold mining, and subsequently worked at Owaka, Kaitangata, and Milburn, where he was a certificated quarryman for over 30 years, during which tinie he resided in Milton. He is survived by Ins wife and one daughter, Mrs L. Porter, of North Canterbury.—An old ex-resident il Milburn district passed away at Christclurch on Thursday last in the person of Helen Sophia, widow of Mr George Riddell, jat one time engaged in the carpentering; trade at Milburn. She was a daughter jof the late Mr and Mrs John Brogan, well-known farmers of Clarendon, and she took a very active part m the Milburn Presbyterian Church choir, P.W.M.U., and dther organisations. During last war she; was an energetic worker for the Red Cross. Shortly after her marriage to Mr Ridiell, who was a returned soldier of 1914-18. they removed to Christchurch, where she continued her interest in church affairs.! Mr Riddell died about seven years ago, iand she is survived by one son, John (ii the Air Force), and a daughter, Jean (itursing in Christchurch).
