PENICILLIN PRODUCTION
AUSTRALIAN SUPPLIES CONTROLLED Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, May 7. Australia is now producing all the penicillin required for the treatment of battle casualties in this theatre of war. In the past, supplies of penicilin for the South-west Pacific have been obtained from America. Announcing that penicillin was being produced at the Commonwealth .serum laboratories, administered by the Commonwealth Department of Health, tho ; Acting Minister for the Army. Senator J. M. Fra.ser, said lie did not think it desirable that " the production of such a valuable and financially 'profitable ( remedy should pass beyond the com- . plete control of the Government." I Hospitals and private practitioners cannot obtain penicillin except in eases where all other methods of treatment have been tried without success and where the use of penicillin is a last resort. No objection is taken to these safeguards, which doctors describe as " n good rule in view of the present acute shortage."
