GIFT TO EDINBURGH.
TO THJS KDITOH. Sir, —For what reason is the public denied information concerning . the amount it subscribed to the mayor's " Gift to Edinburgh " street day? Although the time chosen for this appeal, which competed against the patriotic! effort when at its height, was particularly ill-advised, the public appeared to subscribe well. Is the position that, their money having been received, that's all that is wanted of them, and they may norv be ignored? If so, repercussions may be expected.—l am. etc., Subscriber. May 8. [The mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) stated to-day that the figures had not been made public because a number of contributions had still to be received. The approximate returns were £3ll from the sale at the dugout. £ll3 from the community sing, £-554 from the sale of badges, £27 from Port Chalmers, and £4O from Mosgiel, a total of £1.045. Full details would be given of the completed figures.—Ed., E.S.]
