THREAT TO CHINESE BASE
JAPANESE CAPTURE LINJU SEEKING DECISIVE BATTLE' (Rec. 11.10 a.m.) CHUNGKING, May o. A new Japanese threat to the base of Loj'aug on the Limghai railway, (35 miles west of Chengchow, is reported by the Chinese army spokesman. The Japanese captured Linju, south of JJoyang, and are trying to locate the main strength of the Chinese forces for ia decisive battle. The Japanese now hold all but a 60-mile strip of the Peking-Hankow railway between Kioshan and Yancheng.
AMERICAN INTENTIONS " SMASHED ” BY JAPS' CHINA DRIVE NEW YORK, May 5.
The United Press quotes a Tokio broadcast by Major Yuki, a Japanese army spokesman, in whieli he says that the American intention to open a general offensive against Japan from China bases was miserably smashed by the Japanese campaign in Honan Province. The defence of Chungking would be seriously affected! by the Japanese operations.
