LANDINGS UNDER COMMAND OF ADMIRAL SPRUANCE TOXIO PREPARING JAPS. FOR BAD NEWS (Rec. noon.) PI&AKJj HARBOUR, Feb. 1. Powerful forces of all types under the command of Vice-Admiral Spruance carried out landing operations after intensive preparatory, bombardments by planes, battleships, and light naval v units. The Fourth Marines, . headed by Major-general Schmidt, landed in the Roi Island area, and the Seventh Infantry, commanded by Major-general Corlett, landed on Kwajalein. The Tokio official radio, preparing its listeners for bad news, quoted the newspaper ' 3fainichi' as saying that the loss of the Marshalls would be regrettable for the Japanese, and the mere fact that the enemy was able to attack the Marshalls must not be taken too lightly. Admiral Shimada to-day told the Diet that fighting of particular violence continues in the Marshalls. He stated that communications with that region were imperfect. He 'therefore could not add anything.
